I Got More From Surrogacy Than I Gave

Expect Miracles Surrogacy, Real Journey ·

Everyone assumes I’d feel empty after giving birth.

That I’d hand over the baby and feel a loss. That some part of me would break when I watched them leave the hospital with a child I carried for nine months.

The opposite happened.

I felt whole. Full. More complete than before I started.

And I’m not alone in this. Research shows that decades after their journeys, surrogates describe the experience as a positive part of their identity they remain proud of.

But nobody talks about why.

The Longing That Started Everything

It began when I had my daughter.

I couldn’t imagine my life without her. But getting pregnant with her took time. Long enough that the thought crossed my mind: what if I never had children?

That feeling stayed with me.

It’s a longing. Knowing something is missing from your life. Something out of your control that makes you feel incomplete.

I realized there are people living with that longing every single day. Deserving people who would make amazing parents. People who wouldn’t be parents without surrogacy.

I had the ability to fill that void for someone.

The Mindset That Changes Everything

People tell me they couldn’t do it. Between the shots, the physical process, the potential emotional challenge.

They’re right. It’s not for everyone.

You have to go into it with the right mindset: this child is not yours.

But here’s what that actually looks like in practice. The entire time I was pregnant, I looked forward to sending the parents pictures and videos. Heartbeat recordings from my at-home Doppler. Videos of the baby kicking.

I probably overshared.

Every experience, every moment I could share, I wanted them involved. Because I was doing this for them. This was their journey. I was just the vessel making it possible.

Research confirms this works. Studies show that altruism and empathy are the primary motivations for surrogates, and that maintaining this perspective leads to positive experiences for everyone involved.

The Click That Matters

The matching process is everything.

I looked at profiles. I checked that our beliefs aligned, that we wanted the same things. Open communication. A relationship that continues after birth. A child who knows where they came from.

But the real moment happened on Skype.

When you just naturally click. When they’re personable and easy going. When you feel like you’ve known each other for years and the conversations come easy.

That’s when you know: these are my people.

And that matters because this isn’t a transaction. It’s the beginning of a permanent connection. Studies show most surrogates remain in contact with the families they help create, building relationships that last.

The Moment Everything Becomes Real

I don’t remember a specific moment when it hit me that I was carrying someone else’s child. I kept that mindset the entire time.

But when we started planning for delivery, something shifted.

This is real. This is real for them. I’m really doing this.

And then I saw them with him for the first time.

Indescribable. One of the best moments of my life. One of my proudest accomplishments.

The fullness comes from that. From completing a journey that years before seemed like an impossible dream. From giving someone a gift you know from experience is immeasurable. From the joy on their faces and the instant connection between them and the baby.

It’s a high you can’t describe.

What Nobody Tells You

Here’s what I didn’t expect: the level of passion and pride I would feel. The way being a surrogate would make me feel whole and full.

I get consistent connection with my surrogate family. Pictures and updates. We visited for his 4th birthday and spent a whole week together.

That was the best.

My family gained a family. That permanent, deep connection between their family and mine. My children get to be part of this story and adventure. My husband and I have permanent inside jokes and memories woven into our marriage.

You’re not just giving someone the gift of life. You’re creating a family. Someone’s grandchild. Someone’s niece or nephew. A sibling. Someone’s child.

And all of the memories and experiences that come with having that child in their lives.

If You’re Thinking About It

Maybe you’ve had that same thought. That “maybe I could do this” moment.

Here’s what I want you to know: just do it.

Don’t hold back. Don’t think twice.

If I can do it, so can you. It’s more in reach than you realize.

Just send that email.

Because the emotional and psychological benefits are nothing you can compare to. The beginning of what could be a lifelong, amazing connection.

And the fullness that comes from knowing you made someone’s impossible dream possible.

That feeling never goes away.
