I press the button for the 8th floor, smile at the person next to me and wait for the questions. “Getting close now, right?” “Is this your first?” “When are you due?” A growing belly invites looks, touches and curiosity from young and old. It’s a short ride so I usually just answer whatever question they ask.
Sometimes, they press on and I feel compelled to unwrap a little more of the gift and share with them about my Surrogacy journey. I’m met with wonder, tears, admiration, astonishment and more questions.
I’m almost always met with, “that is an amazing thing. I’m so glad to have met you.” I step off the elevator and I feel just as happy to have planted a seed.
Surrogacy has impacted my life in so many ways. It’s a beautiful coordination of many months of commitments from many people, all with the same goal. This is what makes strangers on the elevator smile and makes my heart bigger for the joy one baby can bring.
