When Sara talks about her now two-year old boy and girl twins her world lights up.
“They are so much fun; always on the go and always exploring,” she said.
“We like to spend a lot of time outside. We cookout, swim, drive power wheels and play with our water tables.
As any parent of a toddler knows, at that age the little ones tend to push limits too.
“A typical day usually includes ‘don’t push your brother’ or ‘stop pulling her hair,’ said Sara as she laughed.
“But every milestone, laugh, tear, hug and snuggle is special and I cherish every single moment of it.”
She cherishes those moments because it has not been an easy road to parenthood.
Sara was born without a uterus.
It is a condition that affects 1 in 4500 women. At 17, she was told that she would never be able to have children.
At an age where so many opportunities are in front of you, being told that something so significant, like having a family, is off the table it’s no question why severe depression set in for Sara.
Although the way she pictured started a family would have to be altered Sara refused to give up on her dream.
While researching other options to have a baby she decided that surrogacy was the right choice for her. Sara eventually married a man who was a true partner, he supported her surrogacy decision and was by her side.
Soon she connected with a surrogate and felt comfortable right away with the match.
Their surrogate even had a dream, foreshadowing the journey.
“After we met, that night, she told me she had a dream that we would have twins!
“Little did I know she was right!!”
“Our surrogate made it a point to include me in “our” pregnancy as if it was my own,” said Sara.
“I made it a point to try to do little things for her so she continued to know how appreciative we were for her.”
Sarah says they became best friends throughout the journey,
“I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.”
Even though Sara is busy with twins and her surrogate just finished nursing school, they still make time to keep in touch and share updates.
“It’s important to me to remain close friends because honestly … I love her.”
“She will never really understand how she has changed my life.”
Now as an active family of four: Sarah, her husband and their two children appreciate every day together and are thankful for the journey that made them whole.
