“WHEREVER THERE IS A HUMAN BEING, THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR KINDNESS.”
The traditional path to parenthood is evolving. First time surrogate Tori Mendelsohn is proud to be part of that positive progress by becoming a surrogate for two intended fathers.
When the mother of two witnessed parental discriminations toward a gay couple wanting to start a family the negative feeling stuck with her.
“I wanted to make a positive change for a deserving couple that may have been passed over because they didn’t fit someone’s idea of how parents should look,” said Tori.
Tori says she is often asked this question: “Why aren’t you going to be a surrogate for a mom and dad?”
“And that is exactly the reason,” she said with conviction. “It shouldn’t matter, there are so many gay couples who are waiting for surrogates.”
Tori was matched with one of those couples anxiously awaiting a surrogate. Because the couple is international they met over skype.
“Right away I got a great feeling; we clicked, this was the couple who I was meant to be matched with,” she said
Tori is currently in the transfer stage of her surrogacy.
She has the strong support of her husband by her side and says she is more than ready for the journey and the questions that may come with it.
Some people ask surrogates if they worry about feeling a bond with the baby that they’re carrying for someone else.
Tori explains that it is a completely different feeling.
“The reasons I bonded with my own children, while I was pregnant, was because I was thinking about our future together, setting up the nursery, buying clothes and bringing them home,” she said.
“What I think about now, as a surrogate, is the moment I get to hand the baby to their parents, I think about their future together as a family.”
Tori says being able to openly communicate with her inspiration team at Expect Miracles and other staff members has made her feel right at home.
“From the beginning, it felt like a family,” she said
Although she is just starting her journey, she has some advice for other potential surrogates.
“If you are thinking about and it’s in your heart, take those first steps and reach out to the team,” she said.
“I am so glad that I did!”
